First Ever UK-Africa Investment Summit Held in London

On January 20th, government officials and business leaders from the UK and twenty-one African nations came together for the first ever UK-Africa Investment Summit. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson opened the summit acknowledging Africa’s considerable business potential and presenting the UK’s intention of becoming Africa’s “investment partner of choice.” Johnson emphasized that we live in a competitive globalized world, and that the UK’s flourishing economy and robust private sector can play a critical role in fostering mutually beneficial investments and commercial relationships in Africa. “Africa is the future,” Johnson declared. “And the UK has a huge and active role to play in that future.”

Another key highlight of the event was the commitment by the CDC (the UK Government’s development finance institution) to invest a further £2 billion by 2022 in Africa and the SDGs.

Empower Africa’s Vice President of Business Development and Operations Shai Bernstein attended the Summit to discuss Empower Africa’s mission of promoting sustainable economic development in Africa with key relevant stakeholders. Shai’s highlights included meeting and networking with influential people such as the Presidential Advisor on Economic and Financial Policy in Sierra Leone Joe Demby; President of the Africa Business Club at London Business School Zandile Nkwanyana; Deputy Head of Mission at the Israel Embassy in the UK Sharon Bar-Li; Vice President of Commercial Business at Windward Ron Crean; and, Founder, and Chairman of Future Planet Capital Douglas Hansen.

“Africa is the future,” Johnson declared. “And the UK has a huge and active role to play in that future.”

Several prominent African entrepreneurs attended the Summit and took to the stage to share their plans for a modern and connected Africa. Kenyan Ciiru Waweru Waithaka, CEO & Founder FunKidz, a successful startup that makes functional children’s furniture, insisted that Africa’s energetic and innovative youth just needed to be given the opportunity to build a strong private sector, and that “manufacturing SMEs are the answer to questions on economic sustainability in Africa.”

Expanding commercial engagements in Africa is good not just for Africa – it will also boost the global economy and allow the rest of the world to benefit from African innovations. For example, Charles Ofori Antipem from Ghana, Co-Founder Dext Technologies, has invented the “Science Set” – a mini portable lab making it easy for young students to perform basic experiments and get excited about science. The Science Sets are currently being tested by 500 schools in the UK, and Antipem has already secured requests from 24 other countries worldwide. Charles urged investors to invest in young entrepreneurs taking the leap: “ Africans are going to transform the continent and the world with their ideas, solutions, and companies.”

One of the themes during the Summit was Africans’ role as witnessed through the success of Mpesa in Kenya. Africa’s economy is moving at a substantial pace with talks and action about sustainability such as the Republic of Seychelles’ world’s first blue bond and Kenya’s sovereign green bonds.

While investors identified the main growth sectors in Africa as infrastructure, job creation, power, and manufacturing, African entrepreneurs called on the need to build and implement strategies to include sustainable growth. Participants did not shy away from identifying existing challenges, such as restricted access to technical support and financial services, that can prevent vulnerable groups like women and youth from utilizing existing opportunities.

Monica Musonda, CEO of Java Foods, and Tatu Gatere, Co-Founder & COO of BuildHer, discussed their experiences as female entrepreneurs in Africa. Lawyer turned entrepreneur Musonda, who founded Zambia-based Java Foods in an effort to tackle malnutrition through the private sector, stressed that the continent will never achieve its full economic potential if women are not given an equal seat at the table. Gatere, who founded BuildHer in Kenya to teach women construction skills, urged policymakers to tackle challenges that keep women from establishing and maintaining businesses, since women “are often the pioneers of community. If you help women you have a trickle-down effect on children and families.”

During the Summit, the UK took the opportunity to announce a £80 million infrastructure partnership between the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) and Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda and the African Development Bank.

The summit concluded with a reminder that prosperity cannot be created through government alone. Commercial partnerships and a linkage to global markets will ultimately create economic development in Africa that is more stable and has more room to grow.

Thousands celebrate at 2nd Annual Education Day in Kono, Sierra Leone

On January 16, 2020, Empower Africa sponsored Kono District’s 2nd Annual Education Day held in Koidu Town, Kono District, Sierra Leone. The festivities were organized by the Kono Artists’ Movement and hosted by Koidu Town’s mayor, Mayor Komba Sam.

The Annual Education Day brought together educators, artists, business leaders, government officials, parents and students to celebrate the transformative power that education can have on the district’s youth. Education expands the mind and opens children to their own potential, allowing them to begin envisioning a future different than their present. In a district where many primary-age children drop out of school to mine for diamonds, the annual Education Day is a chance to inspire students to stay in school and invest in their future.

Approximately 2000 people attended the event – twice the number of people present at the 2019 Education Day. Among those in attendance were participants from Empower Africa Delegation, including Edleen Elba, Women Leadership and Educator, and the Deputy Commissioner of National Youth Affairs Commission, Emmerson Kamara.

Key speakers at the event included Ezi Rapaport, Founder and CEO of Empower Africa; Victor T. Yopoi, Coordinator of Life Beyond Diamonds; Moiwa B. Gandi, Chairman of Head Teachers’ Council; Ibrahim Koroma, Deputy Chairman of Conference of Principals; Alpha Sessay, Assistant Director of Education; Augustine Sahr Sheku, Permanent Secretary of The Ministry of Information and Communication; Mathew Komba Sam, Mayor of Koidu city; Ammar Kamara, Empower Africa’s Country Representative and Simbakoro, Principal of Government Technical Institute.

The festivities featured a celebratory march through Koidu, musical performances by the Artist A-Boy and other members of the Kono Artist Movement, motivational speeches, and an awards ceremony recognizing three top students from the district:

Alimatu Sia Moigua of the “Free the Children” primary school: Best pupil in the national primary school exams.

Mariama Jalloh of the united methodist secondary school – yengema: best pupil in the west african senior certificate exams.

James Moses of the “Free the Children” junior secondary school: best pupil in the basic education certificate exams.

The annual Education Day celebrations are also in line with President Bio’s strategy of creating sustainable economic growth in Sierra Leone through human capital development by focusing on the three pillars of education, food security, and healthcare. Education benefits not just the students staying in school but the Sierra Leonean economy as a whole by giving the country’s youth the tools they need to innovate and grow the economy.

Around the festivities Empower Africa also brought a delegation of senior representatives to visit Koyardu village in the Kono district to see how development is continuing there since the 709 carat peace diamond was found and auctioned.

Children born in Kono deserve opportunities to succeed professionally beyond the diamond mines. Empower Africa is proud to take an active role in promoting education in Sierra Leone, and is excited to see the annual Education Day celebrations growing year after year.

Dizengoff Ghana seeks to meet the needs of small-scale farmers in Sierra Leone

Dizengoff Ghana seeks to meet the needs of small-scale farmers in Sierra Leone

By Shira Aliza

Approximate reading time: 4 minutes.

Around 7.7 million people live in Sierra Leone today – slightly more than the population of Washington State. But while Sierra Leone’s entire GDP stood at 4 billion USD in 2017, Washington State’s GDP from agriculture, forestry, fishing, and hunting alone exceeded 7 billion USD in that same year. Since almost 60% of Sierra Leone’s GDP comes from the agriculture sector, increasing agricultural productivity would significantly boost the whole Sierra Leonean economy.

One of the obstacles facing farmers in Sierra Leone is the lack of appropriate tools. Currently, the country’s agriculture sector consists mostly of small-scale farms operating at a near-subsistence level. Dizengoff Ghana’s mission is to provide farmers with the tools and training they need to do one of the most important jobs in the world – feeding people. This leading international company has been active in Ghana for the past 62 years, managing transactions ranging in size from large turnkey projects to single cans of merchandise.

The company’s agriculture division offers a variety of products and services within the following categories: seeds, fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides; farm machinery and mechanization tools; irrigation systems (drip, sprinkler and center pivot); and Dizengoff-Ghana’s flagship product, the “Dizengoff Farming Kits,” that offer farmers a one-stop-solution to setting up and operating small to large scale greenhouses adapted to the farmers’ needs and the local soil and climate conditions.

The company’s capacity to meet the needs of both large industrial operations and individual farmers makes its services particularly appropriate to the expansion of Sierra Leone’s food production capabilities. Dizengoff Ghana can provide Sierra Leone’s small-scale farmers with the tools and products needed to cultivate their land more efficiently and effectively. And as these farmers increase their yields and grow their operations, Dizengoff Ghana can draw on its expertise servicing larger clients to accompany the farmers as they move towards bigger harvests, guaranteeing food security for Sierra Leoneans and strengthening the country’s economy by exporting the surplus.

Dizengoff Ghana’s General Manager Waldo Boshoff and Irrigation and Greenhouse Manager Samuel Abbey’s first ever visit to Sierra Leone took place during the Empower Africa Agriculture Trade Mission. Waldo and Samuel joined the Trade Mission delegation with the goal of understanding the specific needs of the Sierra Leone farmers to ascertain how Dizengoff Ghana can contribute to improving their agricultural yields and boosting Sierra Leone’s agriculture sector.

As Waldo says:

“If you do what you did, you are going to get what you got. Farmers are doing a great service to the people of Sierra Leone. However, in order to improve the harvest yields and develop the agriculture sector in Sierra Leone, the farmers cannot keep doing what they have done until now. We came on this Trade Mission without much knowledge of Sierra Leone and its agricultural needs, and we observed several concrete ways in which we can help the farming community in Sierra Leone cultivate its land in a much more efficient manner. For example, we noticed the lack of small harvesting and seeding tools that could be used by individual, non-industrial farmers, and we were introduced to potential business partners with whom we can work to bring these tools to Sierra Leone. We are moving forward on some of the projects initiated during the Trade Mission, and we are already planning our next trip to Sierra Leone.

Empower Africa was instrumental in bringing us into the commercial and agricultural reality of Sierra Leone. The Trade Mission connected us with important local partners who will be vital to our success in the country. The field day and the visit to Sunbird Bioenergy was eye opening in terms of appreciating what can be done in Sierra Leone. The post-Trade Mission follow-up with Empower Africa has also been extremely helpful and consistent. We believe that Ezi and his team are in Sierra Leone to make a difference, and we are very excited to see where this partnership goes.”

Providing smaller farmers with the equipment needed to increase productivity and profitability is the one of many steps on the road towards a modern agriculture sector in Sierra Leone – an agriculture sector that can feed the population and serve as an engine for economic growth. EMPOWER AFRICA PRESS RELEASE, November 20, 2019… Empower Africa is pleased to announce the success of its first Agriculture Trade Mission to Sierra Leone, which took place on November 5-7. The Trade Mission included a diverse delegation of 10 leading international agribusiness executives who met with over 200 local attendees consisting of the private sector, NGO’s, and senior leaders of the Sierra Leone Government. The mission analyzed many challenges and opportunities in the country and outlined specific commercial agriculture projects that could develop and diversify the economy and enhance food security.

Key addresses during the trade mission were given by Ezi Rapaport, founder, and CEO of Empower Africa; United States Ambassador Maria E. Brewer; European Union Ambassador Tom Vens; the Honorable Joseph Ndanema, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry; Mr. Alhassan Kargbo, Deputy Director Public Affairs at Sierra Leone’s Anti-Corruption Commission; Dr. Abu Karim, Presidential Advisor for Trade and Investment, Joe Demby, Presidential Advisor for Economic and Financial Policy, and Sheku Lexmond Koroma, CEO of the Sierra Leone Investment and Export Promotion Agency.

In the words of Abubakarr Kaikai, Sierra Leone’s Special Envoy for Trade and Investment: “We are ready to actualize the potential of our land and are seeking to partner with agriculture companies who can support local farmers and invest in strategic projects. Empower Africa’s Agriculture Trade Mission offered us a unique opportunity to meet and network with representatives from international agribusinesses. This mission has accomplished something that has not yet been done in Sierra Leone. Our coordinated effort reflects our new government’s strong desire to strengthen the private sector and attract genuine investors to invest in win-win opportunities for them and our country.”

In support of the government’s vision of a thriving agriculture market, Empower Africa facilitated conferences, networking events, 1:1 meetings, and in-depth tours of locally established agriculture companies.

Ezi Rapaport, Empower Africa’s Founder & CEO, stated: “Sierra Leone has fertile soil, abundant water, tariff-free access to many developing countries like the US and EU, and approximately two-thirds of the population already work in agriculture. Despite these favorable conditions, 85% of its 5.4 million hectares of arable land lie uncultivated and most of Sierra Leone’s food is imported.

Now, President Bio’s recently announced National Development Plan and National Agriculture Transformation Plan aims to expand Sierra Leone’s agriculture sector with the goal of diversifying the economy and advancing human capital development.

We are delighted that our Trade Mission was a success and we see the agriculture sector as the engine for economic growth. We have identified many lucrative commercial opportunities and Empower Africa will now be following up with delegates and attendees to outline and facilitate select strategic projects. This is a pivotal moment in the country’s history and we are confident that by investing in human capital and by creating ethical, transparent and efficient trade, Sierra Leone will be a major contributing force in the world.”

The mission closed with a warm reception and an intimate roundtable discussion with Hon. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, Vice President of Sierra Leone.

Growing Smart and Empower Africa to collaborate on a new Agri Training Center in Sierra Leone

Growing SmartGrowing Smart is an international agribusiness focussing on holistic agriculture solutions, farming education, and turnkey projects. The company’s mission is to empower rural communities by developing farmers’ skills and working with the area’s geography and natural resources.

Growing Smart also uses a wide range of technologies, including aerial imagery and field mapping, to provide GIS-based data which gives farmers the insights needed to make critical decisions regarding land planning, land management, and the allocation of limited resources.

As part of their mission to educate farmers, Growing Smart has established a Practical Agriculture College in Ghana. The college teaches agricultural production through a multi-disciplinary approach. The College’s unique curriculum draws on the latest scientific research as well as traditional local knowledge to give farmers the information and tools needed to derive the most value from their land.

The faculty at the Practical Agriculture College is trained in teaching farmers coming from diverse educational backgrounds – many of whom are illiterate – to apply the latest technologies and cutting edge research results so that they can cultivate their fields in the most efficient and effective ways.

At the Empower Africa Trade Mission Conference, Roy Peleg, Growing Smart’s CEO, presented Growing Smart and his Practical Agriculture College to an audience of approximately 150 government and business leaders.

Empower Africa to lead an Agricultural Trade Mission to Sierra Leone November 4 - 7, 2019

Empower Africa to lead an Agricultural Trade Mission to Sierra Leone November 4 – 7, 2019 to enhance food security and drive sustainable economic development.

EMPOWER AFRICA PRESS RELEASE, October 31, 2019…Empower Africa is excited to announce that it will be leading an Agricultural Trade Mission to Sierra Leone November 4-7, 2019 to enhance food security and help drive sustainable economic development. A detailed itinerary can be accessed online here.

Sierra Leone has fertile soil and abundant water, and approximately two-thirds of the population already works in agriculture. Despite these favorable conditions, 85% of arable land lies uncultivated and most of Sierra Leone’s food is imported. Businesses that bring the right seeds, fertilizers, and farming techniques to Sierra Leone have a great opportunity to build profitable partnerships while contributing to the country’s long term economic prosperity.

President Bio’s recently announced National Development Plan aims to diversify the economy with the goal of stimulating human capital development. This plan has opened a window for agriculture companies to enter into mutually profitable projects in Sierra Leone.

This Trade Mission offers agriculture companies a unique chance to explore and build an in depth understanding of the commercial opportunities in Sierra Leone. Participants will also interact with local agriculture businesses and representatives of the Sierra Leone Government while building important business relationships during planned conferences and networking events.

Empower Africa’s Director of Agriculture, Maoz Aviv, will lead a highly specialized delegation of international companies who have a broad range of agriculture expertise. Maoz is a leading global agronomist and brings with him over twenty years of experience in a wide variety of agricultural activities.

Highlights from the itinerary include onsite visits to local agriculture operations, a full day conference and networking events which include one-on-one meetings with local business representatives and government officials.

Following the Trade Mission, Empower Africa will assist the participants in cementing the connections built during the trip and in laying the foundation for long-lasting business relationships in Sierra Leone.

This Trade Mission is part of Empower Africa’s larger strategy of facilitating mutually beneficial business ventures in order to drive sustainable economic development in Africa.

“We are encouraged by President Bio and the Sierra Leone Government’s ‘New Direction’ focused on human capital development. We believe that there is currently a unique window of opportunity for the private sector to drive sustainable economic development in Sierra Leone and agriculture is a vital sector that will enhance food security and help jumpstart the economy. Our Agriculture Trade Mission this November 4-7 will explore strategic commercial opportunities for the private sector and the country, and we call on industry leaders to join us on our mission.” – Ezi Rapaport, Founder and CEO of Empower Africa.

“We thank Empower Africa for its ongoing support and for organizing this important Agriculture Trade Mission. We take this opportunity to invite genuine investors and leading agriculture companies to Sierra Leone. In line with our Government’s ‘New Direction’ focused on human capital development and our plans to diversify our economy, our Ministry of Agriculture has recently released our ‘National Agriculture Transformation Plan’. This plan outlines many commercial opportunities in the agriculture sector and our government is committed to working with the private sector and international investors that can assist with our country’s development efforts. Sierra Leone is open for business.” – Mr. Abubakarr KaiKai, Special Envoy Trade and Investment, Government of Sierra Leone

Driving Business in Africa: An event for investors hosted by Empower Africa at the Harvard Club NYC

Watch the video summary below

Apx. reading time: 4 minutes

Empower Africa hosted a “Driving Business in Africa” Investors’ Breakfast and round table discussion at the Harvard Club of New York City during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) week in NYC. The breakfast, which took place on September 27th 2019, gave attendees a chance to hear about the investment and business landscape in Sierra Leone from senior government officials shaping the country’s economic future. The event was attended by representatives of international companies operating in the agriculture, tourism, energy, and finance sectors.

Shai Bernstein, Vice President of Business Development and Operations, opened the breakfast by introducing Empower Africa and its mission of driving sustainable economic development in Africa by facilitating private sector growth. The audience learned about the upcoming Empower Africa Business Network platform that will connect stakeholders with grassroots companies, international businesses, and various governmental agencies invested in growing Africa’s private sector. The network will streamline access to critical information, communication and the facilitation of major development and private sector projects.

Ezi Rapaport, Founder and CEO of Empower Africa, discussed his personal connection to Sierra Leone which led to the founding of Empower Africa. Ezi recalled first hearing about Sierra Leone as a child, when his father flew to the country during the Civil War on a World Food Program helicopter. Since then, Ezi had learned more about the challenges faced by the region, including the very low levels of foreign trade and investment and the underdeveloped private sector on the continent. As a result, Ezi created Empower Africa which acts to facilitate investment and deal making in Africa.

Ezi also commended the Sierra Leone senior leadership for its integrity and vision of bringing economic growth to the country through human capital development, and highlighted the window of opportunity for change opened by the current government. Ezi urged the international business community to increase its attention towards the continent, in general and Sierra Leone in particular.

After Ezi, Florizelle (Florie) Liser, President and CEO of the Corporate Council on Africa (CCA), discussed the importance of increasing US and international trade with Africa. Florie described how many African economies are still today exporting mostly raw resources and importing finished products, instead of adding value to the raw materials on the continent and exporting the finished products to the rest of the world. In the name of the CCA, Florie encouraged investors to do business with Africa and help create the operations needed to process African raw materials in Africa, thus creating jobs and contributing to sustainable and real economic growth.

Following the introductory speeches, senior Sierra Leone officials shared their vision for the economic future of the country. The attendees got a chance to hear about the government’s initiatives to boost private trade and investment to the country directly from the people shaping the country’s economic policy.

Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister, the Honorable Prof. David John Francis spoke first. Professor Francis, who returned to serve in President Bio’s administration after holding the UNESCO Chair in African Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Bradford, discussed the shift in national priorities underway in Sierra Leone, and the current administration’s commitment to increasing private trade and investment in Sierra Leone in order to promote human capital development.

For many decades Sierra Leone’s natural reserves of multiple strategic commodities did not bring benefit to the people of Sierra Leone. Now, however, the government is committed to harnessing Sierra Leone’s natural resources to develop Sierra Leoneans’ human capital. Professor Francis described the first national airborne geological survey undertaken by the Ministry of Mines and Mineral Resources. The Survey is underway, and when completed the government will know the quantity of Sierra Leone’s strategic commodities that can be used as collateral to obtain loans that could fund infrastructure and other high priority projects. Prof. Francis encouraged the attendees to invest in Sierra Leone.

Mr. Abubakarr Augustine Kaikai, Special Envoy for Trade and Investment for the Republic of Sierra Leone declared that “our arms are wide open to strategic partnerships.” He discussed the President’s Medium Term National Development Plan and the Office of the President’s Infrastructure Initiative, highlight President Bio’s new direction for Sierra Leone.

Chairman of Presidential Infrastructure Initiatives Dr. John Edward Tambi presented some of the governments’ infrastructure initiatives, highlighting the government’s Lungi bridge project. At present, Freetown can only be reached by boat from Freetown International Airport. The current Sierra Leone government is launching a major construction project to build a seven kilometer bridge over the Lungi estuary in order to connect the airport to the capital by land. The Lungi bridge project also sends a symbolic message that the government is investing resources in making Sierra Leone more attractive to international visitors and investors.

Our next Investors’ Event, in coordination with the Sierra Leone Government, will take place in London from January 16-22, 2020. More information will be updated closer to the event on our events page
