Proparco has committed $15 million to Capitalworks IV, a private equity fund managed by South African investment firm Capitalworks, to support the expansion of mid-sized businesses in South Africa.
The fund is Capitalworks’ fourth private equity vehicle and will invest primarily in local companies with strong growth potential.
Beyond capital, portfolio companies are expected to receive strategic support aimed at strengthening operations, improving resilience, and supporting long-term expansion.
The commitment supports an established South African fund manager and channels development-finance capital into businesses that can be harder to finance through conventional lending.
For growing companies, private equity can provide patient capital for expansion, acquisitions, operational improvements, and market development.
Proparco said the investment aligns with its 2023–2027 strategy, which identifies South Africa as a priority market.
The institution expects the investment to contribute to the creation of more than 2,150 jobs while helping mobilize additional private capital.
“South Africa has one of the continent’s most dynamic private sectors, with mid-sized companies playing a vital role in driving economic growth and job creation,” said Johann Choux, Proparco’s Regional Director for Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean.
“By investing in Capitalworks IV, Proparco is reinforcing its long-term commitment to the region and supporting a local fund manager with the expertise to help promising businesses scale, strengthen their resilience and deliver lasting economic impact.”
South Africa’s mid-market businesses are important employers and suppliers across the wider economy, yet many need equity capital to grow beyond their existing scale.
Proparco’s commitment gives Capitalworks IV additional capacity to invest in these companies and support their development through a period in which access to growth funding remains a key concern for many businesses.
The transaction also reflects the role of local fund managers in connecting institutional capital with operating businesses.
As Capitalworks IV deploys its capital, its investments could support business expansion and job creation while strengthening the pipeline of investable mid-sized companies in South Africa.
