Nnenna Nwabufo Is Shaping Africa’s Future Through Regional Integration and Economic Development

Nnenna Lily Nwabufo is a Nigerian economist and development leader who has dedicated over three decades to advancing Africa’s growth through her work at the African Development Bank (AfDB).

As of October 2024, she serves as the Bank’s Vice President for Regional Development, Integration, and Business Delivery, a role that places her at the forefront of the institution’s efforts to drive inclusive and sustainable development across the continent. ​

Nwabufo’s journey with the AfDB began in 1991 when she joined the Treasury Department.

Over the years, she has taken on various leadership roles, including Acting Vice President for Corporate Services in 2015 and Director General for East Africa from 2021.

In her role as Director General, she led the Bank’s operations across 13 East African countries, focusing on enhancing operational efficiency and developmental impact. ​

Before her tenure at the AfDB, Nwabufo worked in Nigeria’s banking sector, where she gained experience in treasury management.

She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from the University of Lagos and an MBA from Henley Management College in the United Kingdom. ​

Throughout her career, Nwabufo has been a strong advocate for regional integration and sustainable development.

In February 2025, she emphasized the importance of visa-free mobility within Africa, highlighting its role in economic success and integration during a high-level strategic dialogue in Ethiopia. ​

Her extensive experience and leadership continue to contribute significantly to the AfDB’s efforts in fostering inclusive growth and development across Africa.
