Egyptian Health-Tech Startup Rology Secures New Funding to Expand AI-Powered Teleradiology Across MEA

Egyptian health-tech company Rology has confirmed that it has closed a growth funding round, with backing from global healthcare-investment leaders such as Philips Foundation, Johnson & Johnson Impact Ventures, Sanofi Global Health Unit’s Impact Fund and MIT Solve Innovation Future.

Launched in October 2017 by four founders — Amr Abodraiaa, Moaaz Hossam, Mahmoud Eldefrawy and Bassam Khallaf — Rology built a cloud-based teleradiology platform that matches patients and hospitals with radiologists working remotely, helping to bridge widespread shortages of radiology specialists.

A key advantage of Rology’s service is that hospitals and radiologists can begin using it without any upfront infrastructure costs.

As long as they have a laptop and an internet connection, radiologists can review scans from anywhere. Before this new round, Rology completed a pre-Series A funding in April 2022.

It later expanded into Saudi Arabia, the region’s largest healthcare market, by acquiring local firm Arkan United in 2023.

The company has also launched operations in Kenya, and the fresh investment is expected to support further growth across the Middle East and Africa.

“This round brings together mission-aligned leaders across industry, research, and impact investing to advance AI reporting and expand access to high-quality radiology across MEA,” said Amr Abodraiaa.

Rology reports that its platform, currently powered by AI-assisted workflows,  has delivered over 1.3 million radiology reports to more than 300 hospitals across 13 countries.

The network comprises over 200 radiologists, and Rology says its services have contributed to saving more than 1.2 million lives.

The company serves hospitals in both private and public sectors, including facilities in underserved and fragile regions.

In addition to speed, Rology emphasizes quality and cost-effectiveness. Their FDA 510(k)-cleared teleradiology system reportedly achieves 99.89% clinical accuracy and can cut reporting costs by as much as 25%.

The platform supports 12 radiology sub-specialities and eight imaging modalities, delivering results in as little as 30 minutes.

For its part, Philips Foundation,  which has a history of investing in social-impact health ventures, said it returned as a lead investor in this round because it believes in Rology’s human-centered approach, which aims to give clinicians more time and expand the availability of advanced diagnostics where they are most needed.
