Moroccan electric mobility startup GoSwap has secured its first external investment, raising funds from the Azur Innovation Fund as it looks to scale its battery-swapping infrastructure and expand the use of electric two-wheelers across the country.
The Casablanca-based company, founded by entrepreneur Hamza Slimani, is building a system that allows riders of electric motorcycles to swap depleted batteries for fully charged ones in a matter of seconds.
Instead of relying on traditional charging, users can access a network of connected stations where exchanges take less than 10 seconds, removing downtime and making electric transport more practical for daily use.
GoSwap’s model is designed to tackle some of the biggest barriers to electric vehicle adoption in African cities, particularly high upfront costs and limited charging infrastructure.
By separating the battery from the vehicle, customers can purchase scooters without the most expensive component and pay for energy on demand, significantly lowering the cost of ownership.
The new funding will be used to expand GoSwap’s footprint, starting with a deeper rollout in Casablanca, where the company already operates 20 battery swap cabinets located at CashPlus outlets as well as Petrom and Shell fuel stations.
The startup also plans to enter other Moroccan cities and integrate additional electric motorcycle models into its platform.
Slimani described the investment as a turning point for the company.
“The entry of the Azur Innovation Fund is a key moment for GoSwap. Our ambition is to make electric mobility accessible to all by reducing the cost of acquiring and using electric motorcycles while increasing their range. As traffic and transportation costs have become major issues, offering an economical and reliable solution is becoming essential to contribute to cleaner cities,” he said.
The broader context for GoSwap’s growth reflects a shift in urban transport across Africa, where motorcycles and scooters are central to commuting and last-mile delivery.
As cities grow and fuel prices rise, electric alternatives are gaining attention as a way to cut costs and emissions while improving efficiency for both individuals and businesses.
Adnane Filali, managing partner at Azur Innovation Management, said the company’s approach stands out because it goes beyond simply offering electric vehicles.
“With tens of millions of two-wheelers on the continent, the electrification of these users represents a major challenge for African cities. GoSwap provides a particularly relevant answer, because it is not limited to one vehicle; it offers a complete battery swapping service, capable of supporting both urban mobility and new uses related to digital commerce and delivery,” he said.
