Swoop, a food delivery startup founded in Eswatini, has secured $7.3 million in seed funding as it prepares to enter Nigeria, marking its first expansion beyond its home market.
The company is positioning itself as a multi-service platform, starting with food delivery as the foundation for a broader “super app” strategy.
The funding round attracted several Silicon Valley investors, including Long Journey, Variant, Version One, Dune Ventures, Soma Capital, and Zero Knowledge Ventures.
Additional backing came from Walter Kortschak and Base Capital. The capital will be used to build out Swoop’s consumer platform in Nigeria, beginning with its core delivery offering.
This raise stands out as one of the largest seed rounds disclosed by a consumer-focused startup in Africa.
It comes close to the $9 million Series A raised by Nigerian food delivery company Chowdeck in August 2025, after several years of growth across multiple cities.
Swoop’s leadership says the size of the funding reflects the complexity of its long-term ambition.
“It’s super hard to build a super app, and our investors recognise that. They recognise that you need a bit of runway and foundation to be able to do the things that you need to do operationally,” said Demola Adesina, the company’s country manager for Nigeria.
The startup is entering a Nigerian food delivery market that continues to expand rapidly.
Industry data suggests the sector was valued at around $1.1 billion in 2025.
Payment processor Paystack, which works with major delivery platforms in the country, reported that transaction volumes in the sector grew by 187% between 2021 and 2024.
Despite the growth, Swoop believes there is still significant untapped demand.
According to Adesina, the share of food ordered for delivery compared to food consumed outside the home remains relatively low in Nigeria when compared to similar markets in Africa and Southeast Asia.
This gap presents an opportunity to attract new users rather than competing only for existing customers.
“The real opportunity lies in converting people who are not yet using delivery services,” Adesina said, noting that the company’s strategy will focus on expanding the overall market as it builds its presence in Nigeria.
Swoop’s move into Nigeria signals increasing competition in the country’s food delivery space, as both local and international players look to capture a share of a fast-growing but still developing market.
