Africa Data Centres Secures $108.9 Million for South Africa Expansion
Africa Data Centres, a leading provider of data center services in Africa, has secured $108.9 million in funding to expand its capacity in South Africa.
The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has unveiled a significant financing deal to advance Egypt’s transition to sustainable energy, with a $72 million loan package for the nation’s inaugural utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS).
The funding will go to Abydos Solar Project Company, a subsidiary of renewable energy firm AMEA Power, to support the integration of a 300MWh battery storage unit into its 500-megawatt alternating current (MWac) solar photovoltaic (PV) facility in Kom Ombo, located in the Aswan Governorate.
The solar plant, which began operations in November 2024, was previously financed by the IFC in collaboration with global development partners.
AMEA Power’s chairman, Hussain Al Nowais, emphasized the company’s focus on delivering innovative and impactful energy solutions.
“Finalizing financing for Egypt’s first BESS installation, just after our successful 500MW wind project in the country, shows our continued commitment to scalable renewable infrastructure,” Al Nowais noted.
“This project strengthens Egypt’s energy resilience and highlights our role in the nation’s clean energy journey.”
Makhtar Diop, IFC’s Managing Director, described the initiative as a timely and forward-looking response to Egypt’s growing energy needs, particularly during peak consumption periods like the summer.
“We are pleased to expand our partnership with AMEA Power, a company well-positioned for growth,” Diop stated.
“This investment not only reinforces Egypt’s power grid but also promotes cleaner, smarter energy development through cutting-edge technology.”
The battery system is expected to enhance grid stability by storing surplus solar energy and releasing it when needed, laying the groundwork for Egypt to scale up its renewable energy ambitions further.
“We are delighted to partner with ISA to support the development of solar energy in Africa,” said Alain Ebobissé, CEO of Africa50. “This partnership will help to accelerate the deployment of solar energy in Africa and improve the lives of millions of Africans,” he added.
