Mirova has committed $19 million to Cold Solutions Kiambu SEZ Limited, supporting the expansion of climate-aligned temperature-controlled logistics infrastructure in Kenya.
The funding comes through the Mirova Gigaton Fund, a blended finance debt vehicle focused on scaling clean energy and climate solutions in emerging markets.
Cold Solutions Kiambu operates advanced refrigerated warehousing and logistics facilities designed to serve agricultural producers, food processors and the pharmaceutical sector with reliable cold chain capacity.
The company’s facilities, including its Kiambu site near Nairobi, form part of a broader network of temperature-controlled storage that helps keep perishable goods fresh and safe along the supply chain.
In Kenya and across East Africa, inadequate cooling infrastructure has long contributed to significant post-harvest losses, particularly for fruits, vegetables, dairy and other perishables.
Experts estimate that without effective cold chain systems, farmers can lose substantial portions of their produce before it reaches markets, undermining food security and income potential.
John Kimotho, Investment Director for Mirova Kenya, said the financing highlights the Gigaton Fund’s ambition to back low-carbon, resilient infrastructure that strengthens food security and health systems in emerging economies.
He underscored the importance of building climate-aligned cold chain capacity to support regional supply chains in a sustainable manner.
Suki Muia, Investment Director at ARCH Emerging Markets Partners, which co-invests alongside Mirova, emphasized that the partnership reflects a shared goal of reducing food loss and enhancing the performance of food and vaccine supply chains in East Africa through energy-efficient systems.
The investment aligns with broader efforts to attract financing into cold chain infrastructure across Africa, where demand for temperature-controlled logistics is rising in response to expanding agricultural export markets and the need to safeguard medical products such as vaccines.
Strengthening cold chain networks is seen as a crucial step toward reducing food waste, improving market access for smallholder farmers and supporting public health.
