Safaricom Becomes First East African Firm to Cross $3 Billion Revenue Mark

| Article

Safaricom PLC has reached a major milestone, making history as the first East African business to earn over $3 billion (KES 388.7 billion) in annual revenue.

This achievement marks the success of the company’s five-year journey, during which the company transformed itself from a traditional telecom provider into a technology-driven enterprise focused on purpose and innovation.

In the financial year ending March 31, 2025, Safaricom recorded a significant 11.2% jump in total revenue.

Net income also saw a healthy 10.8% rise, closing at KES 69.8 billion.

This performance was powered by strong results from its operations in both Kenya and Ethiopia.

Kenya, the company’s home base, continues to drive most of its revenue.

Service revenue in the country increased by 10.5%, with M-PESA, Safaricom’s mobile money platform, being a major contributor, growing by 15.2%.

Originally just a payment solution, M-PESA has evolved to include financial services like savings, credit, and investment, helping to improve financial access for many Kenyans.

Internet services also performed well, with mobile data revenue up 15.2%, thanks to greater 4G usage. Voice call services, which are declining globally, still grew 1.6%.

Expanding Footprint in Ethiopia Safaricom’s push into Ethiopia is proving successful. In less than two years, the company has built over 3,100 mobile sites and doubled its user base to 8.8 million.

Around 2.8 million Ethiopians are now using M-PESA, with transactions surpassing KES 20.6 billion.

Today, Ethiopia accounts for about 10% of Safaricom’s total revenue. While still investing heavily in this market, the company expects to start seeing profits there by 2027.

It also plans to roll out services like Fuliza, a short-term loan service that has become popular in Kenya.

Beyond business success, Safaricom remains focused on its social mission.

Over the past five years, the company has invested in projects that support health, education, environmental sustainability, and economic development.

These initiatives have reached more than 13 million people.

CEO Dr. Peter Ndegwa explained the company’s broader goals:

“Becoming a tech company is not just about growing revenue. It’s about creating long-term value for our customers, shareholders, and society. We want to be Africa’s most impactful tech brand—one that leads with purpose.”

With its previous five-year plan completed successfully, Safaricom is ready for the next chapter.

The company aims to become Africa’s top purpose-driven tech firm by 2030.

Whether through fintech, improved internet access, or entering new markets, Safaricom is reshaping the future of African technology.
