SUN Mobility to Expand Battery-Swapping Solutions into Africa with Helios Climate and PIDG Backing

Helios Climate, a platform focused on climate investments, has partnered with the Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG) to back SUN Mobility, an Indian company specializing in energy infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs).

The financial support will help bring SUN Mobility’s battery-swapping technology to African countries.

The investment was made through the Helios CLEAR Fund, which is managed by Helios Climate and advised by Helios Investment Partners.

The fund aims to create long-term financial returns while addressing climate challenges across Africa.

With this latest round of funding, SUN Mobility has now secured about $135 million in capital over the last year. This reflects increasing investor interest in its business model, which focuses on building scalable EV infrastructure.

Founded in 2017 by the SUN Group and the Maini Group, SUN Mobility has grown quickly to become a global leader in battery-swapping systems.

The company currently operates more than 900 battery-swap stations and supports over 50,000 EVs.

Its battery technology is designed to be compatible with various types of vehicles, including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, four-wheelers, and larger electric vehicles.

Developed and manufactured in India, SUN Mobility’s system works with different original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), allowing for broad market use and easy adoption in new regions.

Tavraj Banga, Partner and Co-Head at Helios Climate, said the partnership is a strategic move to support clean transportation in emerging markets.

He praised SUN Mobility’s proven technology and its ability to work across many vehicle types and brands, making it ideal for countries aiming to scale up electric mobility quickly.

The company’s entry into Africa is expected to help solve problems such as traffic congestion, poor air quality, and the high costs associated with electric vehicles.

SUN Mobility’s battery-swapping model separates the battery from the vehicle itself, reducing the initial cost and making EVs more affordable.

Chetan Maini, Co-Founder and Chairman of SUN Mobility, stated that the company is ready to grow.

He noted that the modular design and rapid deployment of their swapping stations are well-suited to Africa’s fast-growing cities and common use of two- and three-wheeled vehicles.

SUN Mobility’s solutions are targeted at both government programs and commercial fleets seeking to cut emissions.

The company provides a cost-effective, climate-resilient alternative to fuel-powered transport and is positioned to support Africa’s shift toward sustainable mobility.
