Lagos, Johannesburg, and Kampala have been named among the world’s fastest-growing tech hubs in the 2025 Global Tech Ecosystem Index by Dealroom.co.
The report highlights the increasing role of African cities in shaping the future of global technology.
Lagos took the number one spot globally under the “Rising Stars” category, with the Nigerian city having seen its tech ecosystem grow more than 11 times since 2017.
Despite operating in a smaller economy, Lagos has already produced five unicorns—startups valued at over $1 billion—making it the fastest-growing tech ecosystem in the world.
South Africa’s Johannesburg also earned a place in the rankings. The city has become a key tech and finance center in the southern part of the continent.
Its developed infrastructure and supportive business environment have helped it attract startups and investors.
Kampala, Uganda’s capital, also made the list, reflecting East Africa’s rising presence in the digital space.
The city’s progress has been fueled by mobile technology, a growing fintech sector, and favorable government policies.
The Index was compiled using several important factors: venture capital investment, the overall value of startup ecosystems, the creation of unicorn companies, and partnerships with research institutions. These indicators show just how fast Africa is catching up in global innovation.
The inclusion of three African cities in the global rankings points to a broader trend—Africa’s growing influence in tech.
The continent’s digital transformation is being driven by innovative solutions, a strong entrepreneurial spirit, and the determination of its youthful population.
With Lagos leading globally and Johannesburg and Kampala also ranking in the top 20, it’s clear that Africa is becoming a major force in tech development and startup growth.
